News and Political Action

PSAC in the news

  • Jenny Touchie works as a First Nations Liaison for the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. “When I’m getting paid, I genuinely love what I do,” she says. “I get to work with our First Nations partners on co-operative management and on economic development initiatives and training and capacity building. I find a lot of personal satisfaction in the job that I do.” That’s why, even after not receiving an accurate paycheque since November of 2016, she hasn’t quit. Read the story at the Westerly News.
  • The largest union representing federal public servants is now formally urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to call a public inquiry into the Phoenix payroll system failure. PSAC National President Chris Aylward is quoted in this report from CBC.

  • Anxiety over Phoenix is crippling workers and their families. CBC reports on the results of the survey on Phoenix PSAC commissioned and the stress and mental health issues the pay system is causing federal government workers. Read it here.

  • The problem-plagued Phoenix payroll system has already cost the federal government more than $1 billion and could require an additional $500 million a year until it is fixed, based on the government’s latest estimate made public in June. Story and response from Chris Aylward at the Vancouver Sun website.

PSAC demands justice for Indigenous women and girls

  • On National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21, PSAC launched a campaign to raise awareness on the national issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada, and to urge the government to bolster the efforts of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Find out more and sign the petition at the national website.
PSAC launches campaign recognizing public service work in face of Phoenix

PSAC launches campaign recognizing public service work in face of Phoenix

  • Even when they stopped getting paid, Canada’s federal public service workers kept working for Canadians. PSAC just launched a national campaign to highlight the remarkable commitment of federal public service workers who continue to provide critical services to Canadians, despite more than two years of Phoenix pay problems. Find out more at the national website and keep an eye on your social media feeds for the digital campaign.

Municipal / Local Government Elections
  • The next general local elections in British Columbia are on October 20, 2018. We have heard from several PSAC members who are planning to run for office and are happy to see members getting involved in politics and the community.

  • If you are a PSAC member planning to run in the election, please let us know. We also encourage you to seek the endorsement of your local Labour Council, for more information contact the REVP Office.

Tools for Stewards and Local Activists
  • PSAC will be offering webinars for members who volunteered to be Pay Advocates on how to address common problems with Phoenix. Participants will explore the steps to take when handling pay problems that occur due to transfer of positions or overtime. They will also explore the claims process when employees are seeking reimbursements for costs incurred due to Phoenix errors, such as paying interest on loans. More information and registration at the national website.
