Grant's Law Sit-In - April 14

On Saturday, April 14 at 8 pm, members of the BCFED Young Workers’ Committee are returning to Mac’s Convenience Store to raise awareness of the need for better protections for late night workers. Following the tragic death of Grant De Patie in a gas-and-dash incident in 2005, occupational health and safety regulations were strengthened to better protect late night retail workers. The new regulations were referred to as Grant’s Law. However, in April of 2012, the regulations were watered down due to pressure from companies like Mac’s.

This year, we have a new government and a chance to level the playing field for workers. It’s time for the Workers’ Compensation Board to reinstate Grant’s Law. Young workers will be “sitting in” at Mac’s on Commercial Drive at 10th from 8 pm to 6 am. They will collect petition signatures and talk to the public about the urgent need for better protections for workers.

In solidarity,

IRENE LANZINGER, President, BC Federation of Labour
