February is Black History Month

The PSAC recognizes and celebrates the past and present contributions of Black people and people of African descent. We also acknowledge the discrimination, barriers and challenges that remain prevalent in Canada.

Despite centuries of positive contributions to Canada’s history, people of African descent are still absent in our history books and under-represented in our political and economic institutions and in union leadership.

In December 1995, Parliament recognized February as Black History Month, following a motion introduced by the first black woman elected to the House of Commons, the Honourable Jean Augustine. The motion was carried unanimously.

PSAC is encouraging members to commemorate Black History Month and raise awareness of the contributions of Black workers in the Canadian labour movement by participating in events, such as a viewing of the Cal Best documentary video made by the Workers’ History Museum, in their workplaces or communities.

Cal Best, was a co-founder of the PSAC, an advocate for collective bargaining, and a strong crusader for marginalized communities.

Please contact your local and/or Regional Representatives for additional information on events in your workplace.
