Media Advisory: Correctional Service of Canada workers protest the Phoenix pay system

Aggasiz – Federal public service workers at Correctional Service of Canada institutions in the Fraser Valley are joining in a nation-wide event organized by the Union of Solicitor General Employees, a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. The workers will be calling on their employer to take the measures necessary to they are paid correctly and on time.

“Workers in federal corrections facilities worry constantly about whether or not they will receive a correct pay cheque, or one at all.” says Mike Britton, President of PSAC/USGE Local 20040, Kent Institution. "Our jobs are stressful enough without the added stress caused by the Phoenix pay system. We are calling on the government to take the necessary measures to fix the Phoenix pay system for good."

The Phoenix payroll system used by the federal government has been riddled with problems since it was rolled out in early 2016. Tens of thousands of workers have been under-paid, paid late, or in some cases not paid at all.

“It has been over a year and a half since the pay system was rolled out and the government still can’t pay us correctly and on time for the vital work we do.” says Britton, “On October 31st, we'll be leafleting in our work locations, providing information about the pay system, and advising workers that the Union of Solicitor General Employees is recommending that all employees have had any pay issues should now file a grievance.”

Federal public service workers are proudly committed to providing the services Canadians depend on, yet thousands are still having financial troubles because they are not being paid correctly or on time.
