The Vancouver & District Labour Council (VDLC) urges everyone to support the BCTF in their efforts to achieve a freely negotiated collective agreement. At this point it seems certain that teachers around BC will be on strike Monday, March 5th.
We have had a specific request for support between 7:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday from the Burnaby Teachers Association (see below), and the same information will apply to other school districts.
Please note that the Labour Relations Board has allowed the strike, but not ?picketing? so bring your flags and banners to show solidarity.
In addition to joining teachers outside their schools, you can provide support by:
· Honking and waving as you drive by
· Wearing an ?I support our teachers? pin
· Calling your MLA
· Writing a letter to the editor
· Talking to your kids about the situation and why legislation is not the answer?
· And any other ideas you have to show support for free collective bargaining
Here's the request from Burnaby Teachers'.
Burnaby teachers will be protesting outside all Burnaby schools for the duration of the walkout. Although we are not allowed to form "picket lines" we are going to be able to form what we are calling "leafleting lines" where we will walk outside our schools with signs in hand, distributing leaflets to people who pass. Our leafleting lines will be up on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM at all Burnaby Schools. Any support or visits from our brothers and sisters in the VDLC would be much appreciated.
Supporters should be aware that the Labour Relations Board has ruled that people on the leafleting lines are notallowed to wearsignage, nor are they allowed to block entry ways or stop others from crossing the line, because it is NOT a picket line. However, all those on the leafleting line may carry signs and walk up and down the sidewalks bordering the workplace in the usual manner.
