The PSAC BC Region recently put on a 1-day "Representing Members With Mental Illnesses" course, a first for the PSAC. The course, which was developed and piloted here in BC using some materials provided from PSAC staff members Dominic Lavoie and Mary MacNeil, is designed to help Stewards and Local activists develop the knowledge and skills necessary to assist them in representing members experiencing some forms of mental illnesses. Course participants gained a basic understanding of mental illnesses and then spent time tackling grievances or duty to accommodate cases step-by-step.
Feedback from the participants, many of them seasoned activists, was very positive - Stewards appreciated gaining newer and more specific knowledge. The course content is an ongoing work-in-progress, and we hope to offer it again in BC.
