Are you interested in helping out in the local and possibly being a Steward? Are you curious about what Stewards do other than filing grievances? Are you already a Steward and want some or some more training? Then these are the courses for you!  The Stewards Series provides training and information on all aspects of the work that Local Stewards do and contribute to helping a Local Executive and Local members. We are combining four modules from Tier 1 and four modules from Tier 2 into two 2-day courses, more information below and note this course takes place Saturday and Sunday 9AM to 4:30PM

Why Unions?

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Talk about how unions are good for workers
  • Know a little more about the labour movement and PSAC history
  • Identify current challenges for the labour movement.

Human Rights in the Workplace

Learning Objectives

  • To understand the definition of human rights, discrimination, and harassment
  • To understand the importance of defending and advancing human rights issues in the workplace
  • To understand a union representative’s role in advancing human rights in the workplace
  • To examine available tools, recourses and resources for defending and advocating for human rights in the workplace

Role of the Steward

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Determine what the role of a shop steward is and is not
  • List the legal protections and rights that shop stewards have
  • Understand where shop stewards fit, structurally, in our union
  • Identify in what ways a shop steward can help build a strong worksite

Stewards as Problem Solvers

Learning Objectives

  • Explore conflict resolution tips that can be used in the workplace.
  • Practice holding meetings, interviewing complainants and documenting important facts.
  • Brainstorm ways to deal with workplace problems outside the grievance procedure.

This course takes place Saturday and Sunday 9AM to 4:30PM
