Film Screening: Elder in the Making
Come to a screening of the documentary film Elder in the Making, followed by a workshop hosted by filmmakers Chris Hsiung and Cowboy Smithx. Through footage from the documentary Elder in the Making, personal insights from their travels and in-depth discussions, participants will begin to understand the state of aboriginal relations today and where it might go in the future.
The Elder in the Making screening will coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed with a series of events and activities worldwide on March 21 each year. The day aims to remind people of racial discrimination’s negative consequences and encourages people to remember their obligation and determination to combat racial discrimination.

About the film: Released in 2015, Elder in the Making explores the history of the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Canada. With an underlying theme of reconciliation, first generation Chinese-Canadian filmmaker Chris Hsiung embarked on a journey of discovery deep into Alberta’s Blackfoot territory, where he discovered that he has a significant heritage in common with his guide, artist Cowboy Smithx from the Blackfoot Nation.
This screening is made possible through the Department of Canadian Heritage Innovation Fund. Launched in 2015, the Innovation Fund is an employee-led initiative that serves to fund new ideas brought forth by employees with the objective to improve how we do our work, and to more effectively serve Canadians. The Fund is an opportunity for like-minded people to work together on creative solutions.
