Were you affected by the government’s latest round of public sector job cuts? PSAC has been working hard to ensure that our members have access to a fair and transparent process for finding other work in the core public service.On June 15, 2012, PSAC filed a policy grievance against Treasury Board for its failure to meet it alternation obligations under the Workforce Adjustment Agreement.

Alternation allows people who have been declared “opting” as a result of Work Force Adjustment to switch places (or alternate with) another employee who is willing to leave the public service.In June 2012, PSAC filed a policy grievance because we had received reports that some departments and managers weren’t participating in the alternation process or were denying alternations without good reasons.

PSAC's Human Rights/Programs Section is gathering data and stories about how federal government cuts and Work Force Adjustment has impacted workers with disabilities. Impacts could include the loss of, or changes to, an existing accommodation, being declared surplus, or not being given a reasonable guaranteed job offer.We are asking PSAC members with any knowledge - personal or otherwise - regarding workers with disabilities being affected by the cut backs and WFA notices to let us know.

The Pacific Federal Council has asked us to share the following information regarding alternation options for members who have been affected. PSAC members who have received affected letters and are interested in alternation are encouraged to discuss their options with their manager/supervisor or HR representative.

I want to let you know that PSAC is continuing our fight back campaign against these cuts.

PSAC President John Gordon was on CBC's Power and Politics last night, defending public sector workers' right to decent severance pay if they are laid off. He also emphasized the fact that the Workforce Adjustment Appendix is primarily designed to help government workers find other employment in the public service.
