Stop Bill C-51 Day of Action - Courtenay

May 30, 2015
12:00 pm to 1:00 pm
Courthouse Lawn, Courtenay, BC (Map)

On May 30 concerned community members are organizing an action in Courtenay as part of the national day of action against Bill C-51. Noon, courthouse lawn, then proceeding to MP John Duncan’s campaign office on Sixth Street.

The Bill is now in the Senate, having been passed in the House of Commons. Several Liberal senators have been speaking out against the legislation and a call has gone out for Canadians to flood the Senate with letters.

We have prepared a letter that anyone can sign and email to secd@sen.parl.gc.ca (see below), or you can write your own. In a conversation with a Vancouver letter-writer today the Clerk of the Senate said that they have received hundreds of letters from across the country.  We are recommending that the letter be sent to the Chair of the Standing Committee on National Security and Defence (address on sample letter below) which is hearing submissions on the bill now, and/or letters can be sent to the four BC Senators,

To contact the Clerk of the Senate call 1-800-267-7362 and ask to be connected to the Clerk of the Committee, Adam Thompson, or email to secd@sen.parl.gc.ca. Copies of the letter below will be available at Zocalo at Fifth and Cliffe. Sure Copy at 1255 Cliffe Ave.  in Courtenay, at Virgin Hair, 2704 Dunsmuir in Cumberland and at Blue Heron Books, 1775 Comox Ave. in Comox. If you sign the letter and leave it there it will be faxed. Here is the letter, which can be faxed

Senator Daniel Lang
Chair of the Standing Committee
On National Security and Defence
The Senate of Canada
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A4

Dear Senator Lang:

Re: Bill C-51

Please forward copies of this letter to all members of the Standing Committee on National Security and Defence. I agree with the Canadian Bar Association, who call this Bill "ill-considered" and state that it potentially brings "the entire Charter into jeopardy (and) undermines the rule of law".  Prime Minister Harper has violated the norms and procedures of Parliament so he can force passage of this unconstitutional legislation without real consultation with the public or experts in this area of law. I will not vote for any candidate or party that supports this illegal Bill.

Please do not rubber stamp Bill C-51.  You have the power to stop this miscarriage of justice.  Please use it.

Yours truly,

(your name)
