Vancouver’s Walk for Peace, then and now

The Walk for Peace began in 1982. Against the backdrop of the escalating nuclear arms race many diverse groups cooperated to create Vancouver’s first Walk for Peace.

35,000 people gathered that first year, then 65,000 in 1983, and by 1984 it was 100,000. We gathered at Kitsilano Beach forming a river of people that poured over Burrard Bridge to a concert stage at Sunset Beach. It was magnificent; a proud history for Vancouver and Canada.
The Walk for Peace was exciting and inclusive. Children and teenagers walked with parents and grandparents, students walked with teachers, unionists walked with environmentalists, and people of different faiths and political parties walked together for peace. Our organizing principle was, and still is, “There is no way to peace, peace is the way.”

Now it’s 2012…thirty years later we stand at the birth of a new peace movement.
