Labour movement Vigil to Mark 30th Anniversary of December 6 Massacre
On December 6 labour leaders, union members and community will gather at 6:00pm in Holland Park in Surrey to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women and the 30th anniversary of the December 6 massacre of fourteen students at École Polytechnique in Montreal.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada West Fraser Valley Area Council are joined this year by the New Westminster & District Labour Council. “As union members we work daily for equity and justice. This is the ninth year the PSAC WFVAC has held a vigil to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and to remember the fourteen students killed 30 years ago in Montreal,” said Area Council President Susie Blyth.
The PSAC West Fraser Valley Area Council is comprised of representatives drawn from the over 6,000 PSAC members who live and work in the southeastern part of the Lower Mainland. Area Council members engage with and work alongside community and labour partners towards making our communities better places to live and work.
The New Westminster & District Labour Council is co-hosting the vigil for the second year. “We are pleased to join the Public Service Alliance of Canada in this important event to recognize the impact of gender-based violence and commit ourselves to taking action to make our communities safe and inclusive for everyone,” said NWDLC Secretary-Treasurer Janet Andrews. The event is open to everyone and will feature Surrey-Green Timbers MLA Rachna Singh and speakers from local labour and community groups. The vigil will conclude with a reading of the names of the fourteen women killed in Montreal.
The New Westminster & District Labour Council represents workers in fourteen lower mainland municipalities. We represent approximately 60,000 union members from more than 100 affiliated local unions.
Attendees are also asked to bring a new or gently used clothing donation for a local women’s shelter.
