Thank you to all the members that attended a 2021 Women’s Committee AGM. We all know 2021 is going to be a challenging year given we have the pandemic in addition to all we are already working toward.

Researchers at the University of Toronto are conducting a study on supporting employment for women who have experienced brain injuries as a result of domestic violence. They are looking to include labour perspectives in their study. Researchers would like to interview people who:  1)      can speak to what unions can do to support women workers who have experienced domestic violence; and/or

PSAC produces a wide variety of toolkits, booklets and resource guides for activists, Locals and Branches, and Regional Committees and Area Councils. Thank you to all the members across B.C. that have stuck together and helped us get through an unforseen year of challenges. Looking forward to a healthier 2021 with COVID-19 under control and a strong "recovery" plan, we will be a healthier workforce and union. Please continue to take part in online opportunities such as training, webinars and union events that keep us connected and strong. As women's coordinator of the BC Region, my intention is to continue to focus on affordable child care, gender equity and support the members to the best of my ability.

Thank you to the almost 200 PSAC BC women who responded to our COVID-19 and Women survey. We sincerely appreciate your openness in sharing of your experiences during this challenging time. The responses are being reviewed to best inform the BC Region’s women’s program for 2021.

On Sunday December 6th, the 31st anniversary of the 1989 Montreal massacre and the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, the PSAC the PSAC Vancouver Island Regional Women's Committee hosted a moving and powerful End Violence Against Women Virtual Memorial. The Committee would like to thank everyone who participated and everyone who made a donation towards local women's organizations, and is pleased to share one of the videos that they created for the event.

This year has been challenging for everyone but especially so for women in vulnerable situations. As part of the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence, the PSAC Vancouver Regional Women’s Committee has initiated a campaign called SOS: Supporting Our Sisters which will help assist women who are facing homelessness or require support through transition houses during the holiday season.

The statistics are shocking: gender-based violence is on the rise, including in the world of work.  It’s something a lot of people are silent about, but we need to talk.  November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is the start of 16 Days of Activism on Gender-Based Violence.
