The Liberal government has announced it intends to bring in a new federal pay equity law by the end of 2018. “A proactive pay equity law has been needed for decades,” said PSAC National President Robyn Benson. “We are very disappointed the government is not moving more quickly.”

This October, as we mark Women’s History Month, PSAC celebrates the women of Canada’s labour movement who, for generations, have come together and empowered themselves in the fight for justice. The women of our unions have played an important role in shaping Canada’s history for the better. PSAC is proud of the women in our union who have been on the front lines of this work. From the ground-breaking strike by clerical workers in 1980, to our decades-long struggles for pay equity, our union stands up for women’s rights.

PSAC members from across the province gathered in Vancouver, September 23-25, at our 2016 Regional Women's Conference. Sisters came together to discuss ways to strengthen the PSAC women’s program at the regional level, discussed the impact of domestic violence in our communities and our workplaces, identified ways to support PSAC's pan-Canadian campaign on childcare, and mobilized to create social change.

For the past two years, the Canadian Labour Congress has been spearheading an initiative to address the impact of domestic violence in the workplace.  According to a recent cross-Canada survey conducted by the CLC and researchers at the University of Western Ontario, one in three workers has experienced domestic violence, and this violence follows them to work. Over 80 percent of victims reported that their performance was negatively impacted, and more than half said the abuse occurred at or near their workplace. Domestic Violence affects us all.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada is pleased to see that the federal government is taking the issue of violence against Aboriginal women seriously by launching an inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
