Domestic Violence

For the past two years, the Canadian Labour Congress has been spearheading an initiative to address the impact of domestic violence in the workplace.  According to a recent cross-Canada survey conducted by the CLC and researchers at the University of Western Ontario, one in three workers has experienced domestic violence, and this violence follows them to work. Over 80 percent of victims reported that their performance was negatively impacted, and more than half said the abuse occurred at or near their workplace. This year has been challenging for everyone but especially so for women in vulnerable situations. As part of the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence, the PSAC Vancouver Regional Women’s Committee has initiated a campaign called SOS: Supporting Our Sisters which will help assist women who are facing homelessness or require support through transition houses during the holiday season.

The statistics are shocking: gender-based violence is on the rise, including in the world of work.  It’s something a lot of people are silent about, but we need to talk.  November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is the start of 16 Days of Activism on Gender-Based Violence.
