Many thanks to Giselle Henry, Aboriginal Coordinator on the PSAC BC Regional Council, who has volunteered to prepare a monthly listing of community events - many of which are related to Indigenous issues - from around the province that may be of interest to PSAC members. Here's the event listing for October.

Old Massett

Sisters in Spirit Vigil - The Haida Health Centre will be hosting a candlelight vigil and small supper at the Community Hall on October 4th

Dawson Creek

Sister and Spirit Vigil - The Nawican Friendship Centre will be hosting a candle light vigil, moment of silence and speakers on October 4th, 2017 at 5PM.

Chase

Sister and Spirit Vigil - The Neskonlith Indian Band will be hosting a march on October 4th, 2017 beginning at 6:30PM. The march will end in downtown Chase with a candlelight vigil.

Quesnel

October 07, 2017 and October 08, 2017 - Community Pow Pow - the 44th Annual Memorial Pow Wow Honoring Youth & Elder Matilda

Harrison Hot Springs

Sister and Spirit Vigil - The Agassiz United Church Social Justice and Outreach Committee will be hosting a candlelight vigil at 7PM on October 4th, 2017. The vigil will take place at Agassiz United Church.

Hope

Sister and Spirit Vigil - A candlelight vigils and moment of silence will be held in Hope Memorial Park on October 4th, 2017 from 5PM – 7PM. This vigil is hosted by the Shxw’owhamel First Nation, the Indian Residential School Survivors Society, Yale First Nation and the Hope and Area Transition Society.

Kelowna

Sister and Spirit Vigil - The Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society in Kelowna, BC will be hosting a march on October 4th, 2017 beginning at 5PM. The march will include a moment of silence and bannock and stew will be provided. The Vigil begins at the Friendship Centre at 442 Leon Ave, Kelowna, BC.

Oliver

Sister and Spirit Vigil - The Osoyoos Indian Band will be hosting a vigil on October 4th, 2017 beginning at 5PM. The vigil will include a dinner, balloon release and speakers.

Penticton

Sister and Spirit Vigil - The Okanagan Nation Emergency House and the First Nation Friendship Centre in Vernon will be hosting a dinner, vigil and march on October 4th, 2017 beginning at 5:30PM. The dinner will begin at 5:30PM followed by speakers and a candlelight vigil and march at 7:45PM.

Vernon

Sister and Spirit Vigil - The Okanagan Indian Band will be hosting a gathering on October 4th, 2017 beginning at 12:00PM. The gathering will include speakers impacted by MMIWG, a moment of silence and singing.

Coquitlam

Sister and Spirit Vigil - Douglas College Coquitlam will be hosting a candlelight vigil on October 3rd, 2017 from 10 am – 2PM. The event will include a slideshow of the REDress project, actions for the community and promotion of ongoing actions to address MMIWG.

Vancouver

Sister and Spirit Vigil - The Allard Hall Law School of British Columbia, at UBC Vancouver, will be hosting a Candlelight vigil on October 4th 2017. The vigil will begin at 12:30PM and will include a moment of silence and traditional dancers.

Wild Salmon Caravan - The Caravan starts 10 a.m. Oct. 7 with a Rainbow Parade from the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre (1607 E. Hastings St.) on Coast Salish territories, then stops in Chilliwack on Sto:lo territories and Kamloops, Chase and the Adams River in Secwepemc lands.

New Westminister

Sister and Spirit Vigil - Douglas College New Westminister will be hosting a candlelight vigil on October 4th, 2017 from 10AM – 2PM. The event will include a slideshow of the REDress project, actions for the community and promotion of ongoing actions to address MMIWG.

Surrey

Sister and Spirit Vigil -The Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre will be hosting a candlelight vigil and moment of silence at October 4th, 2017 from 2PM – 4PM.

Victoria

Sisters and Spirit Vigil - Bridges for Women, in Partnership with the Métis Nation of Greater Victoria are hosting a candlelight vigil on October 4th, 2017 in Victoria, BC. This vigil is for clients and staff of the Bridges, if you are interested in attending a vigil please see the Camosun College vigils at Interurban and Lansdowne campuses.

Sisters and Spirit Vigil - The Camosun College First Nations Student Association will be hosting a vigil at the Lansdowne Campus on October 4th 2017 at 11 AM. The vigil will include traditional Coast Salish ceremony and a moment of silence.

Sisters in Spirit Vigil - The Vancouver Island Student Union will be hosting a vigil on October 4th, 2017.

Courtney

Sisters in Spirit Vigil - The North Island Student Union will be hosting a candlelight vigil on October 4th, 2017 at 10AM. The vigil will take place in the campus Discovery Courtyard and will include Elder’s greetings and a moment of silence.
