Hope your summer has been going by wonderfully! I'm so pleased to invite you to our next Movie Night on Thursday, September 7 at 7 pm, where we'll be screening the short films of local director/cinematographer/editor, Moira Simpson, who will also be in attendance! Mo has been an avid supporter of the Richmond Women's Resource Centre for many years and we're grateful to her for sharing her work with us.
These 3 shorts we'll be screened, followed by an open discussion period with Mo:
1) Falling From the Sky (2011)
Surrounded by the beauty of the Slocan Valley in British Columbia, artist Tsuneko Kokubo dances her memories of being stranded in Japan during the Second World War.
2) So Kat'ta (2013)
Two women from different cultures and generations explore the beauty of nature and water - as well as threats to our fragile human existence - in a dance journey through joy, devastation and light.
3) The Thinking Garden (2017)
Set in a village in South Africa, 'The Thinking Garden' explores how meaningful change can happen when older women take matters into their own hands. These women founded a community garden more than twenty years ago in the midst of a devastating drought and the turmoil of the dying years of apartheid. This women's initiative is a model of community action in time of crisis -- a model of local action for sustainable food production delivering a measure of autonomy and purpose. With little access to land and limited political voice, and faced with the impacts of climate change, structural poverty, and HIV/AIDS, rural women created a garden that has been building resilience ever since.
Look forward to seeing you all there and please feel free to invite any women who might be interested in attending! Full details can be found here.
Thanks also to Moving Images Distribution for allowing us to screen Mo's works!
