Representing And Advocating Against Workplace Racism (RAAWR)

January 13 and 14, 2018 - Vancouver, BC

  • Course hours (approximately): 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (both days)

This course is for PSAC union representatives (stewards, local officers, human rights advocates, etc.) who have:

  • experience and training on representing members in the workplace;
  • training and experience on anti-racism;
  • received some union training (or equivalent experience) directly related to representation on human rights issues.

Pre-Requisites:

  • Talking Union Basics course or Introduction to the Union for Indigenous Members course (or equivalent); and
  • Grievance Handling course (or equivalent experience); and
  • Human Rights Are Workers’ Rights course (or equivalent experience) (either online or in-person as part of the Stewards Series course)

Course Overview:

The goal of the Representing and Advocating Against Workplace Racism (RAAWR) course is to develop our union’s ability to provide effective representation on racial discrimination at the Local level. 

By the end of the course, participants will

Know:

  • more about racism and racial discrimination;
  • what to anticipate in racial discrimination situations;
  • options for addressing racial discrimination;

Feel:

  • prepared to intervene effectively in racial discrimination cases;
  • able to advocate and represent on racial discrimination grievances;

Be Able To:

  • support racialized members who are victims of racism;
  • carry out their responsibilities in ensuring our members’ workplaces are free of racism;
  • identify appropriate means of resolving workplace racial discrimination situations.

The Details:

The PSAC will provide travel, accommodation, meal and incidental allowances, loss of salary, and reimbursement of family care costs, in accordance with the PSAC Travel and Family Care policies.  Please note that this is an advanced in-residence course so hotel accommodation will be provided for all participants. For participants in the Lower Mainland, the hotel accommodation will only be for Saturday night.
