Political Action

Our union, along with concerned Canadians in communities across the country, has been working hard to save public services and protect jobs. We are all affected by cuts to services, and we must all take action to defend the public services PSAC members provide to Canadians.

Public services contribute to local economies and help small businesses thrive. Drastic cuts to public sector jobs and salaries have a devastating impact on businesses, particularly in small communities. But paradoxically, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business continues to campaign for cuts to public service jobs and pensions.

Every three years, the PSAC holds its Triennial National Convention, where delegates from across the union come together, debate issues and set direction for the Union for the next three years.We will be doing something new at the PSAC 2012 Convention: for the first time, delegates will have the opportunity to debate and adopt a “Members’ Plan”.The plan is designed to set the direction for the Union for the next three years.

PSAC has joined with the Council of Canadians and others to file for intervener status in a lawsuit seeking to prevent the closure of the Canadian Wheat Board.

The federal government is expected to introduce a bill today that would abolish the Canadian long-gun registry. This is after a similar private members' bill was narrowly defeated last fall. This time, the bill is expected to be forced into law by a majority Conservative government that has spent years attempting to discredit and destroy this important public safety tool.
