Our union, along with concerned Canadians in communities across the country, has been working hard to save public services and protect jobs. We are all affected by cuts to services, and we must all take action to defend the public services PSAC members provide to Canadians.

You can send Stephen Harper a message by voting in the Victoria Federal By-Election on Monday November 26.   The 2012 budget brought in by the Harper government will cut $5.2 billion out of the federal government's operating budget over the next three years. These budget cuts are bad for PSAC members and bad for the Canadians that depend on the services we provide.

After 138 days of hearings, 179 witnesses, and a review of over 3 million pages of documents, the Commission of Inquiry into the Decline of Sockeye Salmon in the Fraser River submitted its final report on October 29th 2012. The government tabled the report in the House of Commons on October 31st.

Once again, the Conservative government is pushing through hundreds of pages of major legislative changes without consulting Canadians.PSAC has major concerns with the latest budget implementation bill, C-45. Our concerns echo the criticism being expressed by the opposition parties, environmental, scientific and Aboriginal groups. We join the call for Bill C-45 to be split into parts and debated separately.

Ottawa-Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board, as well as several other ministers will make announcements today across the country with regards to the Red Tape Reduction Commission.Made up of corporations and lobby groups, this partisan commission is seeking to reduce regulatory compliance instead of focusing on keeping Canadians safe from harm.

On Saturday, September 15the PSAC members across the country demonstrated their support for public services and talked about how federal cuts are affecting all Canadians. Here in BC we hosted events in Vancouver, Surrey, Abbotsford, Victoria, Nanaimo, Campbell River, Prince George, and Naramata. Members hosted booths, rallied for public services, spoke to members of their community, and heard from local politicians across the province.

OTTAWA – The veiled threats of a backbench Conservative MP to punish federal public servants for exercising their democratic rights as citizens has drawn the ire of the country’s largest labour organization.The president of the Canadian Labour Congress says Pierre Poilievre owes an apology to every public servant, especially to citizens of Quebec, for suggesting that a law be passed to deny them the same democratic rights enjoyed by other Canadians.
