Human Rights

The PSAC BC Region has three Human Rights Committees who meet regularly to in person and via conference call to discuss issues and plan events relating to PSAC's Indigenous, PWD, GLBTQ2+, and Racially Visible members.

The BC Region also has four Regional Council members who represent equity-seeking groups. They are responsible for PSAC members within their constituencies and speak for them at the Council, they seek to promote the activism of PSAC members within these constituencies, and they ensure and promote representation for their constituencies throughout our Union.

November 20 is the Trans Day of Remembrance. On this day, we commemorate the transgender and transsexual people we have lost and honour those who continue to suffer from violence, hatred and discrimination in our communities and in our workplaces. PSAC re-commits to fighting for trans human rights, both at the bargaining table and on the political stage.

To: PSAC Racially Visible members in BC   As you may be aware the BC Federation of Labour Union Renewal Conference is taking place this November 16-18 with the Human Rights Diversity Forum taking place on Sunday, November 15. The Human Rights Diversity Forum is a free event; however, pre-registration is required. The Forum and Conference are being held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver. For more details on the Conference and the Forum, please visit the BC Fed website.

PSAC BC, along with local unions and the BC Federation of Labour are partnering with the Aboriginal Community to organize a Sisters in Spirit Vigil to celebrate, honour and support Indigenous women, girls and their families. The vigil takes place on October 4th, 5:00-6:30 pm, at city hall in Vancouver (12th at Cambie).

Thanks to PSAC/UNE member Fareeha Tahir for this write up. Every year Muslims around the world celebrate Ramadan – one of the pillars in Islam, amongst four others. Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and it begins upon the sighting of the moon. It is not a month-long festival, rather a celebration of revelation of the Holy Quran. The reason Muslims celebrate this is because the Quran contains every detail of how a person must live his/her life, in the way which it will benefit them the most.

In fact, Canada was built and continues to be built upon immigration. Each year, thousands of immigrants from around the globe land in Canada in search of a better life for themselves and their families. They bring with them their beliefs, religions and cultures. In turn, these traditions enrich the mosaic of Canadian society.
