Our union, along with concerned Canadians in communities across the country, has been working hard to save public services and protect jobs. We are all affected by cuts to services, and we must all take action to defend the public services PSAC members provide to Canadians.

Federal government workers in Vancouver rally, call on Prime Minister to move quickly at the bargaining table Vancouver – On April 26, over three years after the roll out of the disastrous Phoenix payroll system, union members in Vancouver are rallying to remind the Prime Minister that time is running out to make good on his commitment to support federal public service workers and the vital services they provide.

With a low GDP to debt ratio, and a manageable deficit, this government had the opportunity to invest in making life better for everyone. While there are some initiatives that we applaud, so much more could have, and should have been done. Here are some highlights:

The Employment Standards Act is important legislation that sets minimum standards for workplaces in B.C. However, it has been 15 years since any major changes were made to the Act and 25 years since government’s last comprehensive review.  Workplaces have changed significantly in the last quarter-century. The introduction of new technology and mobile workplaces have changed how work gets done. The structure of work has changed, for example, with more part-time employment. The place of work has changed, with more people working remotely, from home or in virtual teams.

With over 140,000 PSAC members at the bargaining table with the Trudeau government, PSAC President Chris Aylward and Vice-President Magali Picard began a cross-country mobilization tour this week in British Columbia. In the coming weeks, our national representatives will meet with the membership from every region to discuss our bargaining efforts and support mobilization around those key issues.

PSAC welcomes the new funding commitments made in today’s budget to address the Phoenix pay disaster, but they fall significantly short of what is required to end the pay nightmares of Canada’s federal public service workers.

Three years into the Phoenix pay system disaster, the recent Public Service Employee Survey confirms the massive impact it has had on hundreds of thousands of workers, and the large scale of problems that remain.
