PSAC activists from all around the province gathered in March at PSAC BC's 2012 Union School. This year's School, held under the theme “Our Strength: Mobilizing and Fighting Back!” provided participants with the opportinity to learn, practice and take back strategies and skills to mobilize and in the fight back against federal government cuts and privatization.

PSAC President John Gordon was on CBC's Power and Politics last night, defending public sector workers' right to decent severance pay if they are laid off. He also emphasized the fact that the Workforce Adjustment Appendix is primarily designed to help government workers find other employment in the public service.

As rounds of cuts and lay-offs begin in the federal public service we need to remain vigilant about the Workforce Adjustment Appendix and ensure that departments are dealing with affected employees fairly. A merit assessment is used by managers to decide who will become surplus.

PSAC recently launched a webinar (what's a webinar?) training series to provide stewards with additional knowledge on a range of topics. The first webinar Union Activity in the workplace: know your members’ rights, was held on October 26 and provided a legal framework for member activity in the workplace.

Every three years, the PSAC holds its Triennial National Convention, where delegates from across the union come together, debate issues and set direction for the Union for the next three years.We will be doing something new at the PSAC 2012 Convention: for the first time, delegates will have the opportunity to debate and adopt a “Members’ Plan”.The plan is designed to set the direction for the Union for the next three years.
