VANCOUVER, June 12, 2012 /CNW/ - Surfers and swimmers at the popular Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park are at risk after federal cuts this month removed four lifeguards who have been in place each summer for nearly 40 years, says their union.

The concerns of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the union representing workers at Parks Canada, are echoed by Tofino's mayor and the Tofino-Long Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The federal government is set to push through Bill C-38, its 450-page omnibus budget bill. The Conservatives are following a similar pattern as in the previous few years – cramming dozens of major legislative changes in the budget implementation bill, leaving little time for study or debate.

Sisters and Brothers,

The negotiating team is in place, bargaining priorities are set and bargaining proposals are being prepared.

Our national bargaining committee for members at the Canada Revenue Agency met in Ottawa the week of May 14th.  As per our by-laws, members of the committee reviewed bargaining proposals submitted by locals and members throughout Canada and set key priorities for this round of negotiations, including enhanced job protection, scheduling rights, improved leave provisions and fairness for term and part-time workers.
