Victoria – Federal public service workers are rallying in Esquimalt to highlight the dangers involved in contracting out maintenance in the governments new multi-billion-dollar shipbuilding plans. Workers and union leaders at the rally will also call on the government to do more to fix the problem-plagued Phoenix pay system.

The federal government recently awarded an $800-million contract to perform future maintenance and repair work on the Royal Canadian Navy's new Arctic Offshore Patrol ships to the Canadian subsidiary of a French multinational corporation.

Members of the Union of National Defence Employees (UNDE) Local 21018, a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), who are employed by IMP Group International Inc. as Search and Rescure Aircraft Technicians at CFB Comox have been without a contract since July 2015.

As I watch the recent events in Charlottesville and other American cities unfold, I am saddened and disgusted by the rise of openly racist, hateful, sentiment and action in the United States.

Bigoted beliefs like those have no place in the society that we as union members – and as human beings – believe in and work hard to build.

Closer to home, it’s important to acknowledge that racism and white supremacy is not just limited to the United States.
