Conservative cuts could undo years of gains by equity groups

Ottawa - What impact will the Conservative government's plans for across-the-board cuts have on the employment of workers with disabilities, Aboriginal and racialized workers?

That's the question PSAC will put to the Senate human rights committee which is examining employment equity and hiring practices in the federal public service.

TC Bargaining update: Employer needs to address no-cost, low-cost and operational issues

Your Bargaining Team resumed negotiations with Treasury Board from January 31st through February 2nd, our sixth  session of contract talks since initially exchanging proposals in April, 2011.

Due to illness, the Treasury Board negotiator has been replaced by an individual who bargained the PA collective agreement with PSAC during the expedited round in the fall of 2010.

Black History Month 2012: PSAC recognizes contributions of black workers

Every year, there are Black History Month festivities and events  all across the country that honour the legacy of black people or people of African descent in Canada, past and present.

There was and continues to be a lack of positive protrayal of black people's contributions in the communities and awareness of black history. This resulted in the establishment of  a week in February to recognize black people's contributions in the U.S. in 1926. During the early 1970s, the week became known as Black History Week. It was expanded into Black History Month in 1976.

Support USW workers in Burns Lake!

In the evening of January 20, 2012 a massive explosion and fire destroyed the Babine Forest Products sawmill in Burns Lake, a remote community of about 3,600 people in northern BC.

The fire, the worst industrial accident in BC in a generation, killed two workers and injured another nineteen. The destruction of the mill also put 250 members of the United Steelworkers out of work and will have a devastating effect on the entire town’s economy, thanks to the many spin-off jobs created by the local forestry industry.

On January 27th the United Steelworkers announced the launch of a fundraising appeal and the creation of a trust account to provide support to the workers of Babine Forest Products and their families. The labour movement in quickly responded and USW was inundated with offers of support and assistance from other unions and union members across the country.
