While Parliament is in recess over the summer, members of CIU’s National Board of Directors across the country are taking lobbying training and bringing our message to Members of Parliament. We’re talking to MPs about what it means to work for the Canada Border Services Agency and the importance of achieving a contract that provides parity with other law enforcement agencies.

PSAC has filed an unfair labour practice complaint with the Public Service Labour and Employment Relations Board due to the employer’s ongoing refusal to allow the union to post bargaining updates in the workplace. Such refusal violates our legal right to share information with our members about bargaining and interferes in the work we do to represent you, our members. We have asked the labour board to ensure SSO immediately cease and desist from preventing employees from engaging in these lawful union activities.

Our bargaining team met with the employer in Ottawa from June 20 to 22, 2017. After much delay, the two parties met for three days in Ottawa and were able to sign off on a few amendments to the collective agreement including: definition of the family no discrimination leave for family related responsibilities bereavement leave The Employer also removed their demand to roll-back sick leave provisions in the collective agreement

PSAC has been pushing the government to sign four collective agreements by the end of May, but the employer is insisting they won’t be ready until mid-June at the earliest.  These agreements, covering over 100,000 workers, were ratified by the membership in votes that concluded in April.

Our bargaining team met with Canada Post Corporation on May 16 and 17, 2017. We had asked the employer to provide us with detailed information about their efforts to resolve existing surplus situations. The employer provided some of this information this week and committed to provide the balance of the information at our next meeting for our review and analysis. Recently, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced a planned change to its part-time policy. PSAC-CIU has made clear that it is opposed to such changes. At the bargaining table, our position is to improve job and income security for PSAC-CIU members at CBSA. An increase in part-time employment runs contrary to this objective.

Our bargaining team met with SSO during the week of May 1. The team started the week in caucus, where we had planned to review SSO’s proposals, but unfortunately the documents provided by our employer contained many errors and lacked clarity. This made it impossible for us to do our work of analyzing their proposal
